Rt Hon Lord Grocott
Former Government Chief Whip and Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords
Bruce Grocott was raised to the peerage in 2001, after representing three different Parliamentary constituencies in the House of Commons.
He was the MP for Lichfield and Tamworth October from 1974-79, for the Wrekin from 1987-97, and for Telford from 1997-2001.
He became PPS to John Silkin, firstly as Minister for Planning and Local Government from 1975-76, then as Minister of Agriculture from 1976-78. He was Deputy Shadow Leader of the House and Deputy Campaigns Co-ordinator from 1987-92, Opposition Frontbench Spokesperson for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from 1992-93, and then PPS to Tony Blair, as Leader of the Labour Party from 1994-2001, and then as Prime Minister from 1997-2001.
In the House of Lords Bruce has been Government Spokesperson for Defence from 2001-02, for Foreign and Commonwealth Office 2001-02, for International Development from 2001-02, for Work and Pensions from 2001-02. He was a Government Whip, Chief Whip, Deputy Chair of Committees, and Deputy Speaker. He has also served on several select committees.
His political interests include foreign affairs, the media, health, and the machinery of government.
