Sir George Young was the Member of Parliament for Ealing Acton from 1974-97, and has been the MP for North West Hampshire since the 1st May 1997 general election.
In the Commons, he has been an Opposition Whip, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Health and Social Services, and the Department of Environment, a Government Whip, Minister for Housing and Planning, Minister for Housing, Inner Cities and Construction, Financial Secretary, HM Treasury, and Secretary of State for Transport. He was a Member of the Shadow Cabinet from 1997-2000 as Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, Shadow Leader of the House of Commons, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Shadow Leader of the House of Commons and Constitutional Affairs, and is currently Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.
He has been a member of several select committees, including Public Accounts, Modernisation of the House of Commons from 1998-2000, Selection, Standards and Privileges, Liaison, and Reform of the House of Commons in 2009.
Sir George is a Member of several All Party Parliamentary Groups and his political interests include Housing, disability, health education, constitutional reform. He has also stood for election to the post of Speak of the House of Commons on two occasions.
